How it Works

There are so many creative possibilities at The Claypen!  Our friendly and experienced staff is here to guide and help you every step of the way.  No appointment is necessary, although we do suggest reservations for groups of 6 or more.  Feel free to bring in whatever you’d like to round out your visit – beverages and snacks are always welcome.

Painting Pottery:

You don’t have to be Picasso to paint pottery.  It’s fun, relaxing and easy!  Pottery painting is a great activity to do as a social outing.  Catch up with an old friend, spend quality time with your child, or enjoy date night with your significant other.  Pottery painting is also a relaxing activity to enjoy alone.

Here’s how it works…

  • Start off by picking out a piece of pottery.  This is actually the hardest part.  We have lots of great pottery to choose from.
  • Choose your colors .
  • Decide on a design for your masterpiece.  Feel free to look through at samples, books, stencils, stamps and sponges for creative ideas.
  • Put paint to pottery. For children, this can take a ½ to 1 hour. For adults, this can take 1 to 2 hours.
  • Once you finish painting, leave your creation with us to glaze and fire.
  • Pottery is usually ready 6 to 7 days later.

Cost:   Our studio fee is $4 per half hour per painter plus the price of your pottery (average is between $10 to $20).  The average cost with pottery and studio fee is $20 for a child and $30 for an adult.

Fused Glass:

seascapeglass

Our newest addition to The Claypen!  You’ll have fun creating one of a kind masterpieces that are both functional and decorative, perfect for gifts or to use and display in your home.

Fused glass projects use a variety of glass in different shapes, sizes and colors. These glass pieces are combined, arranged and layered with an endless combination of interesting designs and dimensions.  We have cutting tools if desired and are always ready to  show you how to use them.  No experience is needed to create fused glass projects – just a love of  creating!  When a design is complete, it is fused in our kiln.  Depending on the project, may be put through a second time to give it a  shape other than flat.

You can make a wide variety of projects in all shapes and sizes with fused glass.  Dishes, vases, suncatchers, pendants, votive holders, nightlights, business card holders, and more.  If you’re stumped for ideas, ask us about our pre – cut kits – just assemble according to directions and you’ll have a great project just like that.  You can also ask us to see our idea book or visit our fused glass board on pinterest!  (https://www.pinterest.com/TheClaypen/glass-fusing/)

To work with glass and our tools, we require our customers to be  ages 8 and up for safety reasons .  We do, however, recognize that our younger customers will want in on the fun too, so we have made some pre – fired pieces for children 5 and up to use.  No sharp edges!  They can just arrange however they like and glue into place.

Cost:  Cost varies by project size and can range from $14 – $75.  There is no studio fee for glass projects.

Bottle Slumping!  Have a special wine bottle at home that you’re not quite sure what to do with?  Bring it in to be slumped (flattened or shaped) in our kiln for just $10!  Once slumped, you can use your bottle as a cheese board, cutting board, trivet, or serving tray!
